The Spanish stock market trades 36.3 billion euros in December

  1. The Equity trading volume in 2020 is 8.6% lower than in 2019, but the number of trades increases by 49.6%
  2. New issues in the Fixed Income markets from January increase 23.7%
  3. The accumulated trading volume since January increases by 6% in Mini IBEX 35 Futures and by 11% in Stock Options

The Spanish stock market traded 36.3 billion euros in Equities in December, down 10.7% from the same period last year and down 14.7% from the preceding month. The accumulated effective volume traded to the end of December totalled 429.3 billion euros, 8.6% less than in the previous year. The number of trades in December was 4.43 million, up 58.6% year on year and down 24.1% from November.  The number of accumulated trades to the end of December amounted to 55.7 million, up 49.6% year on year.

BME's market share in Spanish equities in December stood at 73.13%. The average spread for the same period was 7.80 basis points at the first price level (14.7% better than the next trading venue) and 11.60 basis points with order book depth of 25,000 euros (27.4% better), according to an independent report by LiquidMetrix, available here: www.bmerv.es/ing/Miembros/MIFID_II.aspx. All figures include both transparent order book (LIT) trading – including auctions – and non-transparent (dark) off-book trading.

Fixed Income trading volume in December came in at 13.1 billion euros, down 13.8% from November and down 9.8% year on year. New admissions to trading, including Public Debt and Private Fixed Income, came in at 26.4 billion euros, up 23.7% year on year for the January to December period. The outstanding balance stood at 1.7 trillion euros, which implies a year on year increase of 6.2% for the twelve-month period.

Trading in the Financial Derivatives market in 2020 was up 6.1% in IBEX 35 Mini Futures and up 10.9% in Stock Options, compared to the previous year. Trading in Stock Futures in December increased 1,498.6% from the previous month while the volume of Mini IBEX Options was up 18.0% compared to November.

Trading in Stock Options increased 11.7% compared to the same month the previous year, in line with 10.9% annual growth for the twelve-month period.
